About
A small independent project that turns an ordinary photo into a vintage print, an album cover, a trading card or a photo booth strip, without ever uploading it.
- Private by designYour photo is processed inside your browser. It never leaves your device.
- Free, no sign-upNo account, no email address, no trial. Choose a photo and start.
- Not AIColour, grain and frames are drawn by code, so you and your picture stay exactly as they are.
- Twelve themes, nine erasFrom a 1900s silver portrait to a 2100 hologram, with frames to match.
Why we made it
Many photo-effect tools want your picture on their server before they show you anything. We wanted the opposite: open a page, choose a photo and see it as it might have looked in another decade. Nothing to install, and nobody else gets to see the picture.
It also started as a love of old photographs: the soft colour of an instant print, the flash and date stamp of a disposable camera, the stiff pose of a studio portrait, the thick border of a school photo. This site is a small way to play with those looks using your own pictures.
How it works
When you choose a photo, your browser draws it onto a canvas and applies colour curves, grain, scratches, light leaks and a frame. All of that code runs on your own device, and the preview changes as you slide along the time line from 1900 to 2100. When you press Download you get a JPG, saved straight from your browser. The How it works page has the details, and the Era guide explains the history behind each look.
What you can make
Each theme pairs a decade’s colour treatment with a frame drawn from scratch, so you can make a school ID, a mixtape cover, a festival greeting card, a film negative strip or a collectible trading card. Pick the one closest to what you have in mind:
Inspired by real places, copied from none
Some looks borrow the habits of a place, such as the painted backdrops of Indian neighbourhood studios, American yearbooks or European railway posters, and each description says so. Every frame uses made-up names, so nothing imitates a real brand, publication, band or school.
About the sample photos
The sample portraits and the sample landscape on the site are AI-generated images. They are not photographs of real people or real places. We use them so that you can see every look straight away, before you add a photo of your own.
What it is not
This is not an AI portrait generator. It will not put you in period clothing, change your face or guess how you would have looked in 1920. It applies a look to the photo you give it, and the results are stylised imitations made for fun, not historical records.
What is coming next
Family functions, Holi and Eid cards, sports days and pets are on the list, along with looks inspired by Japan, Brazil, the Middle East and Africa. What comes first depends on what people ask for, so please tell us.
Say hello
Suggestions, bug reports and ideas are all welcome. Email contact@retrophotomaker.com or use the request form on the By decade page. If something looks wrong, tell us your device, your browser and the look you picked. Our privacy page explains what the site does and does not collect.
