Y2K and digicam

A small digital camera screen, a flip phone picture message, an old computer window and a chat profile card: four looks from the years when everything was silver and a little blurry.

Ready-made looks

Pick a theme, then a look. Every frame from every theme is also in the Frame list above, grouped by theme.

The early 2000s, on purpose

Photos from the early 2000s have a look of their own: small sensors, a harsh flash, bright whites and a date glowing in the corner. This category puts your picture on the screens people actually saw it on, from a pocket camera to a flip phone to a bulky monitor.

The digicam look adds a soft, slightly noisy digital colour, then a camera display on top. The date stamp follows the year you pick, so a 2004 setting prints a 2004 date. Names, phones and windows are generic, with no logo or brand copied.

Which photo suits which screen

The digicam screen shows the whole picture, so a wide, well-lit photo works best. The flip phone and the chat card crop to a small window, so a close portrait reads clearly. The old computer window suits almost anything, including screenshots and scenery.

What each look does

Digicam screen. A compact digital camera view with focus brackets, a battery icon and an orange date stamp in the corner. The stamp text is editable. It starts at 2004, and you can drag the slider or change the year to move it earlier or later.

Flip phone MMS. A silver flip phone showing your photo as a picture message, with a sender name and one line of text. The phone is generic, not a real model. It starts at 2003, and you can drag the slider or change the year to move it earlier or later.

Old PC window. Your photo inside a grey image-viewer window on a teal desktop, with a title bar, a status line and a taskbar. Everything is drawn from scratch. It starts at 1999, and you can drag the slider or change the year to move it earlier or later.

Chat buddy card. A glittery chat profile with a screen name, an online dot and an away message. The chat window is imaginary and imitates no real service. It starts at 2002, and you can drag the slider or change the year to move it earlier or later.

Tips for this theme

  • Change the date stampOpen Frame and type your own date on the digicam screen. A date from your own year looks the most believable.
  • Name the senderOn the flip phone, type a nickname under Sent by and a short line for the message.
  • Use the era sliderSlide a little earlier for a grainier look, or later for the cleaner phone-camera years.
  • Pick a bright photoEarly digital cameras blew out highlights. A well-lit photo with simple colours looks the most authentic.

How to give a photo the Y2K look

Choose Digicam screen, add a bright photo, type your own date stamp and download the JPG. Try the flip phone for a picture-message version of the same photo.

Questions

How do I add a date stamp to a photo online?

Choose Digicam screen, add your photo and type the date you want under Frame. The orange date stamp appears in the corner, like an old digital camera.

What is a digicam filter?

A digicam filter makes a photo look like it came from an early 2000s compact digital camera: soft digital colour, bright flash and an orange date in the corner. This digicam photo effect works online and in your browser.

How do I make a Y2K photo?

Pick one of the four Y2K looks, add a bright photo and move the slider to a year between 1999 and 2006. The result is a free Y2K photo effect you can download as a JPG.

Is there a 2000s photo filter I can use for free?

Yes. The Y2K and digicam page is a free 2000s photo filter with a camera screen, a flip phone, an old computer window and a chat card. Nothing to install.

Is the flip phone a real model?

No. It is a generic phone drawn from scratch with no maker name. The same goes for the computer window and the chat card.

Can I change the date on the digicam photo?

Yes. Open Frame and type any date you like. The default date follows the year you picked.

Does this look like an actual digital camera?

It is inspired by early compact cameras, with focus brackets, a battery icon and a date stamp. It is a style, not a copy of one camera.

Does my photo leave my device?

No. Everything on this page runs in your browser, and your photo is never uploaded.

Can I change the year printed on the frame?

Yes. Use the Year you were born box, or drag the slider. Dates and captions follow the year you choose, unless you have typed your own text.

Which file formats can I use?

JPG, PNG and WebP work everywhere. HEIC opens in browsers that support it, such as Safari.
